How to Get Around Istanbul: Practical Transport Guide
Getting around Istanbul might seem daunting at first — the city has 16 million residents spread across two continents — but the public transport system is surprisingly efficient and cheap. The key is understanding your options and having the right tool: the Istanbulkart.
The Istanbulkart is essential. This rechargeable card works on all public transport (metro, tram, ferry, bus, metrobus and funicular) and costs around 100 TL. Each ride costs about 20 TL, much less than paying cash. Buy one at metro station machines and recharge at the same machines or kiosks. Tip: a single card can be used for multiple people by tapping it several times in a row.
Tram T1: your best friend in Sultanahmet. The T1 line connects the airport to Sultanahmet via the most useful stops: Eminönü (ferries and Spice Bazaar), Sultanahmet (Hagia Sophia and Blue Mosque), Grand Bazaar and Kabataş. It's slow but reliable, running every 5 minutes. Avoid rush hour (8-9am and 5-7pm) when it's absolutely packed.
Metro M2: from Taksim to Beyoğlu and beyond. The M2 line connects Taksim to the new airport (IST) via Yenikapı and is fast. For the new Istanbul Airport, there's a direct metro line (M11) that takes about 50 minutes from the central area. It's the most economical option versus a taxi, which can cost 400-600 TL.
Ferries: the world's most scenic commute. Crossing the Bosphorus by ferry is an experience in itself and costs the same as a metro ride with the Istanbulkart. Most useful routes: Eminönü → Kadıköy (30 min, Asian side), Eminönü → Üsküdar (20 min), and Kabataş → Kadıköy (25 min). Ferries run every 15-20 minutes and the views are spectacular. Trick: the upper deck has the best views, and the onboard çay sellers are part of the experience.
Taxis: beware of scams. Istanbul taxis have a bad reputation for a reason. Always insist they turn on the meter (taksimetre), use apps like BiTaksi or Uber for safety, and be suspicious of any driver who claims the meter 'isn't working.' A typical ride from Sultanahmet to Taksim costs about 100-150 TL. From IST airport to the center, expect 400-600 TL by taxi versus 20 TL on the metro.
Airport transfers. Istanbul's new airport (IST) is 50 km from the center. Options: M11 metro (affordable, ~50 min), Havaist bus (comfortable, ~90 min, around 200 TL), taxi (expensive, 400-600 TL) or private transfer (most comfortable if you arrive tired, from €45). If you arrive at Sabiha Gökçen airport (SAW) on the Asian side, Havabus runs buses to Kadıköy and Taksim.
Expert tip: if your hotel is in Sultanahmet, you can do 80% of sightseeing on foot. The T1 tram covers the rest. For the Asian side, ferries are more practical and scenic than the underwater Marmaray metro. And if you travel with a private guide, they'll handle all transport — including knowing the shortcuts that save half an hour in traffic.
